TFT LCD Image Retention, often referred to as "ghosting," is a common occurrence in Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Displays (TFT LCDs). It is characterized by the faint persistence of an image on the screen after it has been replaced by a new one. This happens when some pixels in the LCD do not promptly return to their non-active state, leading to the remnants of the previous image, or "ghost," remaining visible.
Primary Causes and Contributing Factors
- Pixel Response Time Main Factor: The slow response time of liquid crystals is the primary cause of ghosting. When pixels transition between states slowly, the previous image can linger, creating a ghosting effect.
- Prolonged Display of Static Images Impact on Pixels: Displaying static or high-contrast images for extended periods can make some pixels less responsive to change, exacerbating ghosting.
- Temperature Effects Sensitivity to Temperature: Liquid crystals' response time can be affected by extreme temperatures, increasing the likelihood of ghosting.
- Quality of the Display Display Efficiency: Lower quality TFT LCDs, including older models, may experience more ghosting due to less effective liquid crystal materials or substandard electronic components.
- Age of the Display Degradation Over Time: With age, the liquid crystals in TFT LCDs can degrade, leading to slower response times and increased ghosting.

Avoiding Ghosting in TFT LCDs

- Use Screen Savers: Employ screen savers to keep the LCD screen displaying different content, avoiding static images for more than 20 minutes.
- Regular Screen Cleaning: Create a completely white image and move it around the screen for several hours without turning on the backlight to refresh the pixels.
- Turn Off Backlight: Extend the lifespan of the backlight LEDs by turning off the backlight when the display is not in use.
- Power Off Sleep Mode: Put the LCD screen into sleep mode when not in use to prevent unnecessary driving of the pixels. These measures can help reduce the occurrence of ghosting on LCD screens. Additionally, adjusting the motherboard's voltage to match the LCD screen is crucial in preventing ghosting.
