Optical bonding, a key process in display manufacturing, is primarily differentiated by the type of adhesive employed. There are two main categories:
- OCA (Optically Clear Adhesive)
OCA is a transparent, adhesive film that is used to bond layers within a display. It is available in a pre-cured, solid sheet form and is predominantly used in the dry optical bonding process. This adhesive is commonly found in smaller devices such as smartphones and tablets where precision and uniformity are paramount. The benefits of OCA include its ease of application, consistent thickness, and the absence of a curing process, making it ideal for mass production. OCA is highly effective in reducing reflection and glare, providing a bubble-free and flawless bond.
- OCR (Optically Clear Resin)
OCR is a liquid adhesive used in the liquid optical bonding process. It is applied in a liquid state and then cured to solidify, forming a strong bond. OCR is favored for larger displays or when a very thin adhesive layer is necessary, and it is frequently used in TV screens, monitors, and industrial displays. The curing process for OCR, which typically involves UV or heat, results in a robust and durable bond. This method is particularly effective in filling irregularities and gaps more efficiently than OCA. The liquid nature of OCR offers greater flexibility for different screen sizes and shapes, although it necessitates more precise application to prevent bubbles and inconsistencies.
Both OCA and OCR enhance the optical performance of the display by minimizing the air gap, thus reducing reflections and glare. The selection between the two depends on the display's specific needs, such as size, shape, manufacturing process, and the desired optical characteristics.
