How Was Touch Screen Technology Invented?

Earlier, when the iPhone came out, people were stunned when they saw this new phone. There were no familiar buttons on the phone, all operations were done with a 3.5-inch (8.89 cm) touch screen. Due to the use of full touch screen control technology, unexpected effects have been produced. The touch screen has replaced the fluorescent screen and the button keyboard. The coolest thing is that when you pinch the screen with two fingers, the window and image will shrink immediately, and if you open the two fingers again, the image will immediately become larger. You can also use your fingers to move the image around on the screen, all these effects are developed on the basis of touch screen technology.

In 1964, the invention of the mouse brought computer operations into a new era. However, in less than 10 years, the appearance of touch screens has made the graphical human-computer interaction interface more intuitive and smooth. This invention that made a major change in the computer world did not come easily, and the touch screen technology also developed in difficulties. In 1971, the physicist Samuel Hast of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States was teaching at the University of Kentucky. The massive amount of student work made him review a lot of graphics and data every day, this kind of repetitive work made him invincible and the annoyance forced him to start thinking about how to improve efficiency.

For the dake of dealing with these graphics and data, a quick processing mode gradually emerged in his mind, which is to tap and click instead of tapping the keyboard. In order to implement this model, a prototype needs to be made. Hast transformed three basements into workshops, one for wood processing, one for manufacturing electronic components, and the other for assembling machines. In this way, he established his own touch screen workshop and produced the first prototype that was manufactured and assembled by hand. Although this prototype is incomparable with today's touch screens, this cumbersome device is the originator of modern touch screens of various sizes.

This prototype successfully realized the working mode of issuing work instructions by touching with hands, Hast quit his job and established his own company. In less than two years, this technology has gradually matured and was rated as one of the 100 most important new technology products that year by the US "Industrial Research" magazine. But only the family knows how difficult it is for Hast. In 1973, the company's products had begun to take shape, but looking at the company's account books that year, only $10 was left.

In 1974, Hast's company conditions finally improved, they began to cooperate with Siemens this year. With a strong technical backing, the touch screen technology has been continuously improved. Hast Company finally succeeded in developing the first transparent touch screen, and obtained the technical patent on October 7, 1975. In 1977, after the invention of electronic drawing and 5-wire resistance, touch screen technology was greatly improved, and the products became more and more stylish. At this time, touch screen technology was basically fixed as the model used today. However, by the early 1980s, The company's operations are still not smooth. At that time, the company's technology was mainly used by the US military. It was not until 1992 that Hast Company exhibited 33 TVs equipped with touch screens for the first time at a science and technology exhibition, allowing people to touch the magic touch screen with their own hands.

The initial launch of the iPhone became a milestone in the development of touch screen technology. Apple designed a mobile phone with at least 20 buttons to require only three or four buttons, and the rest was done by the touch screen. People quickly accepted this "touch" operation, you can see touch screen operations everywhere, such as bank withdrawals, hospital registration, ticket purchases, etc. At present, the touch screen has been developed to express more complex instructions with the position of the finger touch, the strength of the touch, and the direction of the touch. With the touch screen, people can obtain Internet information and push their own information to share with others easily. In just a few years, touch screen technology has entered human life and has become an indispensable device for mobile phones and computers.
